When Garrowhill was little more than green fields adjacent to the tiny mining hamlet of Barrachnie and the village of Baillieston, JM Scott Maxwell, who owned the estate, envisaged a residential area with each house having its own back and front garden and within which there would be suitable recreational facilities to support the community.
With this in mind he offered the land to Henry Boot Garden Estates, a Sheffield based company, who were looking for the development to be designed as an English village based around a village green or park. By agreement with Henry Boot JM Scott Maxwell set aside 20 acres within the land sold for the provision of a Park, School, Church, Tennis Club and Bowling Green. He further offered to lay down a bowling green at his own expense provided sufficient interest was shown by the local community.
The building of Garrowhill commenced in 1934 and as sufficient interest had been shown by the developing community a bowling green was laid down and had its first opening day on Saturday the 8th May 1937. The land allocated by JM Scott Maxwell for the bowling green was gifted in perpetuity to the bowling club.

At this first opening day the club had one green and 23 members. The first club pavilion which took the form of a decommissioned railway carriage was installed in 1938. The railway carriage pavilion was replaced with a more permanent structure in 1939 which in turn was replaced by the current pavilion which was officially opened on the 8th of April 1967. The pavilion was extended to incorporate an enclosed conservatory area along the greenside elevation of the existing pavilion in 1975. The club continuous to develop, evolve and invest in its assets. In 2012 the club undertook a comprehensive refurbishment and development of the main hall and in 2024 the Ladies toilet and looker room areas were extensively redeveloped and further major refurbishments works were undertaken to most of the club facilities.
The club membership continued to grow after the war and as the number of playing members grew the need for a second green also increased. A number of fund raising events were held which provided half the money required for the second green. These moneys along with a grant and an interest free loan from the members enabled the club to lay down the second green which was officially opened in 1954. The club currently has 280 members.

Originally located within the Lanarkshire Boundary the club was affiliated to the Lanarkshire Bowling association (LBA) but following boundary changes the area of Garrowhill was incorporated within the City of Glasgow boundary and also became affiliated to the Glasgow Bowling Association (GBA). The club continues to be involved with both associations and takes part in the competitions of both associations frequently hosting visiting competitions and finals. The founding members of the club also sought membership to the Monkland Bowling Association an active affiliation that continues to this day.

Since 1980 the club has run indoor carpet bowls competitions throughout the winter and has general and senior club members actively involved in the North Eastern Carpet Bowling League which held its inaugural league game on the 18th September 1982 at the St Rolox Bowling Club.
