Garrowhill Bowling Club
On the 25th of July the East End of Glasgow saw the largest gathering of Egyptians and Romans it has seen in many a year as Garrowhill Bowling Club held its “Bowls Through The Ages Pageant And Tournament”
The Pageant and Tournament which was part of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 Festival and was supported by Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council, Sportscotland and Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, aimed to show how bowls has been at the heart of communities since the games inception 7,000 years ago in ancient Egypt and up until the present day in the United Kingdom and right across the 56 countries that make up the Commonwealth.
The day brought together the young and not so young, experienced bowlers and first time players at a gathering from a wide range of backgrounds and groups in the community for an inclusive, sociable fun day celebrating the game of bowls and the long lasting influence that Glasgow has had on the sport world wide.
The day started with a parade, by the twenty four teams of tournament players from Garrowhiil, Baillieston, Mount Vernon, Springboig and Sandyhills bowling clubs and Garrowhill Primary School, St Andrews Scouts and Garrowhill Guides – all dressed as Eygyptians or Romans – around Garrowhill led by the Grey Friars Pipe Band. This was followed by the History of Bowls being acted out on one of the clubs greens by characters from the past before the tournament was formally opened by Baillie Kevin Lalley.
Part of the event was also an exhibition of “Bowling and Bowls Manufacture Through The Ages” in the adjacent Community Hall which was managed by Garrowhill and Swinton Community Councils. The day was also supported by a Rally of Classic Cars from Gartcosh Classic Car Club and Emergency Service Vehicles from Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
A great day was had by all. And the Romans won !!
